National Broadband Network - Possibilities and Practicialities for Local Government

Possibilities and Practicalities for Local Government: 4-5 March 2010

YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE EXCITING POSSIBILITIES AND PRACTICALITIES OF THE NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK IN YOUR MUNICIPALITY.

In 2009 the Rudd Government announced the development of a $43 billion National Broadband Network (NBN). The network is expected to cover over 90% of the population and extends into both the existing brown field areas and the newly developing green field estates.

For the Local Government sector, the new NBN provides exciting opportunities for both infrastructure and economic development. It will transform the way our communities and individuals communicate, receive services and carry out business. It will provide opportunities for our residents to live, engage and work more locally than ever before.

This conference will provide attendees with an understanding of the many possibilities and practicalities of the Government's NBN.

We will hear from Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and several industry leaders and visionaries, each providing expertise that will be relevant for all State and Local Governments across Australia. The linkage with State Government policies and programs will be explored with speakers highlighting the best approaches.

The City of Whittlesea has foreseen the opportunities of introducing fast broadband networks for its local community, and has been a pioneer in facilitating the generation of Fibre To The Home networks since 2001. It currently has multiple new estates connected using this ultra fast Optical Fibre technology.

A range of Councils from different States have been working hard to prepare their municipalities for the new network through implementing programs that foster the installation of Fibre Conduit in all new developments. These leading Councils will be presenting at the conference explaining the execution, challenges and outcomes of rolling out the program in their municipality.

The conference will provide your Council with the knowledge needed to seize maximum advantage of the biggest National infrastructure program ever implemented in Australia.

The City of Whittlesea is excited to offer this opportunity to collect the best working examples, and share their knowledge and experience with other Local Governments, as they prepare for the implementation of the new National Broadband Network in their municipalities.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Local Government leaders, economic development professionals, planners, engineers, developers, policy staff and organisations and businesses looking to be involved in this venture - anyone interested in leveraging the most out of the Federal Government's $43 billion investment in community infrastructure.
