Council approval is generally required to erect, construct or alter signage or advertisements to be displayed on the outside of a business premises. This approval is subject to Clause 52.05 of the Whittlesea Planning Scheme (WPS) (Advertising Signage).

You may need to apply for a Planning Permit for signage if you will be conducting one of the following:
- install or construct a new sign
- renew or replace an existing sign, and/or
- repair or maintain an existing sign.
Some signs do not require Planning Permit approval, please see RELATED DOCUMENTS for these sign types.
Every property in Victoria is located in a specific zone and may also have additional planning conditions in the form of overlays. These are described in Victorian Planning Provisions (VPP) and are used by planners to determine the types of works that can occur in certain locations.
