Have your say on the Green Wedge Management Plan

Overview

As part of the Metropolitan Strategy: Melbourne 2030, the State Government is responsible for encouraging sustainable management of green wedge areas for non-urban uses. A green wedge refers to all land beyond the urban areas.

To achieve this, Council has received support to develop a tailored management approach that promotes and encourages the diversity of the Whittlesea Green Wedge. The Whittlesea Green Wedge supports various farming activities, parks, recreation and tourism opportunities, scenic landscapes, water supply catchments and significant areas of flora and fauna habitat.

The Green Wedge Management Plan aims to highlight the unique features of our rural areas. The Management Plan will identify a vision, develop objectives and recommend actions for sustainable management. As part of this requirement, Council would like to receive your input to better understand the community’s values and aspirations.

Update

In December 2008, the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) released Melbourne @ 5 Million  an update to the metropolitan strategy Melbourne 2030: Planning for Sustainable Growth that identifies the need to accommodate an additional 600,000 new dwellings in Melbourne over the next 20 years.

This document has implications for the western and north-western portion of the Whittlesea Green Wedge with regards to possible future expansion. Accordingly, the Draft Whittlesea Green Wedge Management Plan will not be released for public consultation until the State Government findings are finalised (expected to be around November 2009) and the implications assessed.

Comments received about the Whittlesea Green Wedge from the local community, organisations, and government departments during the consultation phases held in 2008 have been documented and will be incorporated into the draft management plan. There will be additional opportunities to comment on this plan when the draft document is released for public submission in early 2010.

  • Stage 2 - Community Views Paper - closed on 13 October 2008
  • Stage 3 - Draft Green Wedge Management Plan - Due for release in early 2010
