Big investment in roads and public transport

Big investment in roads and public transport

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

Thanks to some big investment from the Victorian and Australian Governments, there are major transport projects underway in the City of Whittlesea that will go a long way to easing congestion and long commutes.

Relieving road congestion continues to be one of our top priorities.

We're well aware that residents spend far too much time in the car which means less time with family.

While we're responsible for local streets, more major roads and public transport are the responsibility of the Victorian Government.

Local state and federal MPs are well aware of local transport priorities and work hard behind the scenes to ensure our community needs are met.

We are now seeing the results with a number of major projects underway.

In the last three years we've received nearly $1 billion dollars in Victorian and Australian Government funding towards important local projects including:

  • $600 million extension of the South Morang train line to Mernda (opens 2019) with new stations at Marymede, Hawkstowe Parade and Mernda
  • Construction of the O’Herns Road/Hume Freeway interchange, planned to open in 2019/2020
  • Upgrade of Plenty Road with an additional lane in each direction between McKimmies Road and Bridge Inn Road
  • Upgrade of Yan Yean Road with road widening to be undertaken north of Kurrak Road
  • New bus services in and throughout the suburbs of Epping, Epping North, Mernda and Doreen
  • Feasibility Study into the extension of Tram 86.
