Council encourages everyone to get fire ready

With summer and the fire season fast approaching, now is the time to start preparing your property for the fire season.

Fast-moving grass fires continue to be a risk in the City of Whittlesea. Research shows that it only takes two weeks of hot, dry and windy weather to create dangerous fire conditions.

City of Whittlesea Director Planning and Development, Justin O’Meara urgent residents to get prepared ahead of the CFA declaring the fire season.

“There are a range of other things you can do to prepare your property including clearing any rubbish, dead leaves and fallen trees branches from your property and your gutters,” he said.

“People should review their fire plan and emergency kit as well as checking their insurance policy.”

Mr O’Meara reminded households they were required to ensure the height of their grass and nature strips were kept to 10 centimetres or under.

Council will be carrying out fire hazard inspections ahead of, and during, the declared Fire Danger Period to ensure properties do not pose a risk to the property owner or their neighbours.
