Food in your garden waste bin

Food in your garden waste bin

Thursday, February 13, 2020

Council recently agreed to roll out a food and organics collection service to the whole City of Whittlesea from 1 July, 2020.

The decision follows a successful trial in selected areas last year.

To participate in the program all you need is a garden waste bin and you'll be able to add in food into it.

The collection will play an important role in supporting residents to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

The food and garden waste will be mulched together by a professional composting facility, so it will be broken down via a natural process. It will then be available to purchase as a soil fertiliser.

In the City of Whittlesea, more than 40 per cent of the weight in an average garbage bin is food waste.

More details on the new service will be available closer to the time.
