Help us create a sustainable and climate resilient future for all

Tuesday, September 06, 2022

City of Whittlesea residents are invited to have their say on Council’s draft Sustainable Environment Strategy and Climate Change Plan which will shape our environmental priorities over the next ten years.

The draft long-term strategy and plan outline the City of Whittlesea’s approach to achieving the environment we want for our future and will create a roadmap for a sustainable environment and action on climate change. The draft Sustainable Environment Strategy Action Plan 2022-2024 sets out the first two-year’s commitments to delivering the Sustainable Environment Strategy, and integrates actions that address climate change, biodiversity, city forest, green wedge, water, waste, recycling and community empowerment.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said that creating a sustainable environment was one of Council’s key goals and these documents would guide the City of Whittlesea’s approach to tackling key issues for our environment while also supporting the community to take action.

“Becoming a resilient, climate-ready community means that we all have to play a part in minimising the impact on our environment – it is a shared responsibility,” said Ms Wilson.

“Council and community must work together to reduce overall emissions, protect and enhance our environment and commit to taking action to mitigate or adapt to climate change. It is imperative that we transition to become a net zero emissions community by 2036 and we need to ensure our people, businesses and environment are resilient to our changing climate.”

“These draft plans have been informed by extensive community consultation with residents, businesses, school children and industry stakeholders, and take into account state, federal and global plans, priorities and targets.”

“We know that our community are passionate about the environment and are committed to achieving a clean and sustainable future for the City of Whittlesea. We want to hear your thoughts on the priorities and vision outlined in our plans, and your feedback about how we can work together to achieve our shared goals.”
