Take a stroll down Sustainability Lane at the Community Festival

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

This year’s City of Whittlesea Community Festival will be greener than ever with a range of eco-friendly and sustainable ideas and programs on show, as well as a range of hands-on activities that visitors can get involved in.

Take a stroll down Sustainability Lane and learn all about our natural landscapes, our local flora and fauna and about simple ways we can all become leaders in sustainable living.

There is so much to see and do in Sustainability Lane, including:

  • Heading out on a guided walking tour to Quarry Hills Bushland Park
  • Get up close and personal with the Animals of Oz
  • Kids outdoor bush activities with Eco Explorers
  • Take some time out to take part in a nature mindfulness meditation session
  • Try out an e-bike
  • Learn about local community gardens and how you can get involved
  • Get your bike repaired by the friendly volunteers from the Mernda Repair Café.

City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson is looking forward to showcasing our stunning local environment and all the wonderful things we can do to help make our city sustainable and climate resilient for generations to come.

“Come along to the festival with the family and join in the activities in Sustainability Lane to learn about all the different ways we can care for our environment,” Ms. Wilson said.

“We will also be officially launching our Sustainable Environment Strategy 2022-2032 and Climate Change Plan 2022-2032. These plans were adopted at the Council Meeting in November 2022 and outline our environmental priorities over the next ten years to ensure we are creating a liveable and sustainable environment for our residents.”

“You can find out more about our priorities and also make your own environmental pledge at the festival.”

As part of our commitment to reducing waste, food vendors at the festival will be serving up their delicious food on reusable plates and bowls from Green My Plate. This eco-friendly initiative will drastically reduce the amount of waste produced, with the plates and bowls continuously collected and washed throughout the day, ensuring that we are diverting single use food packaging from landfill.
