Food and garden waste bin

You can pay a small annual fee to have a 240 litre food and garden waste bin, where you can put food waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, bread and cooked meat and bones, as well as garden waste such as grass clippings, cut up branches and prunings. The food and garden waste bin has a light green lid.

  • As this is an annual service, we do not provide credits or refunds if you cancel the service part-way through a year.
  • Your food and garden waste bin will come with a small 7lt kitchen caddy and one roll of 150 compostable liners to help you collect food waste in your home. 
  • Please note: food and garden waste bins are only eligible for residential properties (not industrial or commercial). 

Bin guidelines and tips

  • Food and garden waste bins are only eligible for residential properties (not industrial or commercial).
  • Your food and garden waste bin will come with a roll of 150 compostable caddy liners to help you collect food waste in your home.
  • All items from the garden must be placed loosely in your bin. 
  • Food waste can be put in the bin loosely or in an approved caddy liner. Only use lime green compostable caddy liners, that are certified to the Australian Commercial Composting Standard (AS4736).
  • Place grass clippings near the top of your bin to make it easier to empty.
  • Cut up branches and prunings so they fit easily. Branches must be less than 30cm in diameter.  No tree stumps accepted.
  • Do not put anything in a bin that prevents you closing the lid.
  • Place your bins at least half a metre apart on your nature strip for collection.
  • Maximum number of food and garden waste bins per property is two (2).

Property owners can order a food and garden waste bin online or by calling us on 9217 2170. It costs $105.15 per year (July to June) to use the food and garden waste bin service. This fee will appear on your annual Rates Notice and covers a full year of service including collection and processing.

Tenants

After paying the initial up-front fee, this fee will appear on your annual invoice and covers a full year of service including collection and processing.

Please note some rural residences are ineligible for a food and garden waste bin.

Collection day

Food and garden waste is collected each fortnight, on the opposite fortnight to your recycling bin, and on the same day as your rubbish bin.

Public holiday bin collections

Bins get collected as normal on public holidays that fall on business days except for the following public holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Good Friday
  • ANZAC Day
  • Christmas Day

If these public holidays fall on a business day bins will be collected a day later and collections may run one day behind schedule for the rest of that week. 

Acceptable food and garden waste

You can put the following materials in your food and garden waste bin:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • egg shells
  • bread scraps
  • dairy products
  • loose tea leaves and coffee grounds
  • meat and seafood (raw and cooked, including bones)
  • tissues, paper towel and shredded paper
  • food scraps from meals
  • food that has passed its used by date 
  • grass clippings
  • leaves
  • prunings
  • small branches
  • common garden weeds
  • flowers

Unacceptable food and garden waste

You should not put the following items in your food and garden waste bin:

  • plastic bags (or food and garden waste in plastic bags) 
  • rubbish or recyclables
  • teabags
  • building material, soil, rocks and bricks
  • nappies (including compostable or biodegradable nappies)

If you have signed up for the food and garden waste bin, you can order one free roll of 150 compostable caddy liners to help collect food waste in your home.

Using these liners makes handling your food waste easier, meaning you can help the environment with less clean-up.

If you wish to cancel your food and garden waste bin service, you must let us know in writing.
