Activate Your Community workshop series

Explore your passions, unearth tips for collaborating with others, and build new networks, experience and knowledge with our Activate Your Community workshop series.

Activate Your Community is a series of four practical workshops that will build your skills and confidence to create strong, connected and welcoming communities. These workshops will bring to life the 'Community Activate Toolkit’ – a resource designed by the City of Whittlesea to support residents, groups and the wider community in leading positive, local change.

Communicating and sharing information

Tuesday 6 July, 10.00 - 11.30am and Thursday 8 July, 7.00 - 8.30pm

Promoting your community project, event or campaign is an important step. This workshop will help you to fine-tune what you want to communicate, and find the best ways to gain broad support and get the word out. 

It will cover:

  • Exploring different options to communicate for your purpose
  • How to attract media attention
  • Using social media and online platforms to connect and promote

Engaging your community

Tuesday 27 April, 10.00 - 11.30am and Thursday 29 April, 7.00 - 8.30pm

Have you ever wanted to be more involved in your community, and find opportunities to create and connect with others? This workshop will provide tools for bringing people together to plan and work on common interests. 

It will cover:

  • Engaging others, gathering ideas and collaborating
  • Mapping individual and combined skills or resources
  • Creating a common vision
  • Setting up community groups to function well
  • Influencing positive change

Organising community projects and events

Tuesday 11 May, 10.00 - 11.30am and Thursday 13 May, 7.00 - 8.30pm

Whether you have a great idea to unpack or want to organise a local event, this workshop will help you get started. 

It will cover:

  • How to plan a project or event, including Covid-19 requirements
  • Applying for funding and what to include in your application
  • Preparing and monitoring a budget
  • Conducting a risk assessment and management plan

Evaluating community projects

Tuesday 18 May, 10.00 - 11.30am and Thursday 20th May, 7.00 - 8.30pm

Demonstrating the impact of a community project or event can be difficult, but not impossible. This workshop will unpack how to tell a story of the positive difference made, whether it be to attract funding or to help you plan well in the future. 

It will cover:

  • An explanation of community impact and how to measure it
  • Evaluation options to suit your project or event
  • Planning your evaluation and exploring different ways to gather data

  • There is no cost to attend these workshops
  • The workshops are offered in sequence — you can attend all four or only the topic/s that interest you

Activate Your Community workshops are hosted by the City of Whittlesea. These workshops will be facilitated by Helen Rodd from Hot House Community Projects.

Helen has been working across the youth, education and community sectors for over 30 years. Her passions include working alongside diverse communities, and practising (and teaching) community development. Her goal in working with communities is to understand and facilitate the complex dynamics of generational social change. Her current focus is transforming communities through grassroots community participation and community leadership.
