Throwing chemicals in your rubbish bin is dangerous. They can explode, catch fire, leak or mix with other chemicals, either in your bin, in the collection truck or at the sorting facility. To dispose of your household chemicals safely, bring them to this Detox Your Home event by Sustainability Victoria.

This free service is for household chemicals only.

• The maximum acceptable weight or size for any single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres.
• Decanting isn’t permitted, so bring chemicals in disposable, clearly labelled containers. If you don’t know what’s inside, label the item as 'unknown'.

• Detox your Home does not accept paint. Paint can be disposed of at any Paintback drop off location or visit the A-Z guide to waste and recycling page.

On the day, follow these safety procedures:

• Label your items, using the original packaging if possible
• Put your items safely in your empty car boot or Ute tray
• Bring your order number from your registration

At the event:

• Follow event signage and directions provided by event and council staff.
• Stay in your car – our trained event staff and qualified chemists will unload items for you.
• It takes around 5 minutes for our team to service each car. 

If you can’t get to this event, here’s how to store unwanted household chemicals until you can safely dispose of them.
