Connecting Communities at National Volunteer Week

Volunteer Week

Volunteers across the City of Whittlesea will be celebrated for their incredible dedication and generosity during this year’s National Volunteer Week, taking place from Monday 19 May to Friday 23 May.

As part of Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, this year’s theme, ‘Connecting Communities’ highlights the power of volunteering to bring people together. In line with this theme, a range of activities have been organised to connect current and potential volunteers, offering an opportunity to share experiences and express their passion for contributing to the community.

We are excited to offer a week of free events to thank our volunteers and inspire new community involvement.

Highlights include creative workshops such as pottery and candle-diffuser making, as well as energising Zumba Gold and African drumming sessions. These engaging activities support health and wellbeing, while encouraging connection and fun. All events are free, inclusive, and designed for people of all ages, backgrounds and interests. Participants will enjoy light refreshments, meaningful conversations and can take home handmade items as tokens of appreciation.

A special lunch will honour the vital role volunteers play in the community. The City of Whittlesea Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACC PYP) representatives will be available throughout the events to share information on volunteering opportunities and provide support.

Volunteering offers many personal benefits beyond helping others. It improves mental wellbeing, boosts confidence, builds valuable skills and creates opportunities for people to connect with their community. Whether you’re looking to give back, meet new people, or grow professionally, volunteering is a meaningful way to make a positive impact.

Places in National Volunteer Week activities are limited - to register or find out more about each event, visit National Volunteer Week.

Quotes attributable to City of Whittlesea Mayor, Councillor Martin Taylor:

"As a long time, volunteer, I have witnessed first hand the invaluable contributions volunteers make across the City of Whittlesea. They give their time, energy, and compassion selflessly supporting others, strengthening connections, and building a more resilient and caring community."

"National Volunteer Week is our opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks and publicly recognise the lasting impact that volunteers have on people’s lives. Their dedication, often quiet and behind the scenes, uplifts individuals and communities in meaningful ways every single day."

"I encourage everyone, whether you’ve been volunteering for years or are considering getting involved for the first time to join us in celebrating National Volunteer Week. It’s a moment for recognition, gratitude, and inspiration, and a reminder that even the smallest acts of service can create powerful change."
