Recovering from an emergency 

After an emergency, there are practical things you can do to assist your recovery.  

  • First and foremost, ensure your safety as well as the safety of your family, pets, neighbours, and friends. 
  • Call your insurance company as soon as possible to report any damage or loss. If you are renting and have contents insurance, contact your insurer and get in touch with your real estate agent. It helps if you have photos of the damage and a list of affected items.  
  • Go to the VicEmergency website or call the VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226 to find out what support may be available to you. 
  • Emergencies can cause strong emotional, physical and behavioural reactions. If you experience this and it has not started to ease after three or four weeks, you can seek help your GP. You can also reach out to the following counselling services:
