Thomastown ward by-election

Following the resignation of Nic Brooks as the Thomastown Ward Councillor in January 2026, a by-election will be held in May.

The by-election will be run and managed by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) and will take place via postal voting.

I live in the Thomastown ward – what do I need to do?

If you live in the Thomastown ward, and you are eligible to vote, you are required to vote.

Check to see which ward you live in using the interactive map on the VEC website.

Voting is compulsory

If you are an Australian citizen aged 18 or over at the time of this by-election and you live in the Thomastown Ward, you must enrol to vote by 4pm Wednesday 18 March 2026.

Am I enrolled to vote?

You are already enrolled to vote if:

  • You will be 18 years of age or over on election day and
  • You live in the City of Whittlesea and are on the Victorian State roll for your current address.

If you were enrolled for the local council elections in 2024, you will remain enrolled for this by-election (unless you are no longer eligible).

Who needs to enrol for the Thomastown Ward by-election?

You need to enrol with the VEC for the Thomastown Ward by-election if:

  • You are an Australian citizen aged 18 or over on election day and
  • You live in the City of Whittlesea’s Thomastown Ward and you are not on the State electoral roll or
  • You have lived at your present residential address within the Thomastown Ward for at least a month and have not updated your enrolment details, including any changes to your postal address.

Enrol online at the VEC website or pick up a form at any post office and return it to the Victorian Electoral Commission.

When you can apply to Council to enrol?

You may also apply to Council to enrol if you: 

  • are 18 years of age and over on election day
  • are a property owner, occupier or corporation in the Thomastown Ward
  • are not already a state-enrolled voter who lives in the Thomastown Ward.

How to vote?

The VEC will mail out ballot packs to enrolled voters from Monday 11 May 2026 to Thursday 14 May 2026.

Voting closes at 6pm Friday 29 May 2026. Ballot papers must be completed and posted no later than this time. 

Nominating as a candidate

Being a councillor provides an exciting challenge and an opportunity to represent your community and play a vital role in shaping the City of Whittlesea.

If you are an Australian citizen, aged 18 and over, on the electoral roll, completed the mandatory Local Government candidate training and looking for an opportunity to contribute to the future direction and development of your community, you should consider standing for Council.

As part of Council’s Governance Rules, an Election Period Policy has been adopted to explain how Council will conduct our business leading into an election.
