Every big dream starts small and it all starts with kinder
Published on 04 February 2026
Now is the perfect time for families to apply for a place at a local kindergarten. Applications are open for three-year-old children in 2027 and four-year-old children in 2028, giving families across the City of Whittlesea the opportunity to take the next step in their child’s learning journey.
Kindergarten is free to apply for and free to attend. With more than 40 kindergartens located close to home, including two new kindergartens opening in 2026, eligible families can access up to 15 hours of free kindergarten each week. Families with children enrolled in long day care centres receive an annual fee offset for the kindergarten program.
Kindergarten is where big smiles, new friendships and curious minds begin. Through play-based learning, kindergarten helps children build confidence, develop social skills and feel ready for school.
Families are invited to experience kindergarten first-hand at a free kindergarten open day, where they can explore the learning environment and meet educators:
- Thursday 26 February, 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Find the list of participating kindergartens at whittlesea.vic.gov.au/kinderopenday.
There’s more exciting news for families as four-year-old kinder gradually starts becoming Pre-prep, allowing more hours of play and more hours of learning for eligible children. To know more visit whittlesea.vic.gov.au/Preprep.
Families can apply now and give their child the best possible start - building confidence, curiosity and a love of learning from the very beginning!

Quotes attributable to City of Whittlesea Mayor Councillor Lawrie Cox:
“The early years are a crucial time for children’s growth and development. Kindergarten supports children to build confidence, independence and strong social and emotional skills that stay with them as they move into school and later life.”
“Council remains committed to delivering Kindergarten services that provide a safe and supportive environment where children can learn, grow and feel curious about the world around them. These early experiences help set a strong foundation for their future.”
