A revised draft 10-year master plan for the Lauries Field open space in Doreen was endorsed for community consultation at the Council Meeting on Tuesday 18 November.

Following extensive community consultation, Council has listened to local community feedback and made key updates to the draft master plan.

Over two consultations periods, from June to July 2024 and July to September 2025, more than 650 people shared their thoughts through surveys, pop-ups, and an information session. During the consultation, the community expressed strong views about what was important to them, including:

  • support for the lake to remain in its current form
  • protecting and enhancing the conservation area
  • enhancing native vegetation and trees
  • improving paths, entrances and lighting.

The updated plan reflects these priorities while balancing environmental sustainability, accessibility and recreational use.

Key changes to the master plan

  • The lake will stay and will not be changed. Council plans to explore ways to improve the water quality including filtration, stormwater harvesting and vegetation management.
  • Conservation areas will be enhanced with interpretive signage, fencing and more native plants.
  • The Monterey Cypress trees’ health will be monitored and will stay unless they are unsafe. The plan will investigate replacement planting for the future, including more native trees that will complement the reserve and improve local wildlife habitat.
  • Six parking bays will remain on Lake Front Mews, while the others will become open parkland with a path and lighting.
  • Dogs will continue to be allowed on leash, with extra bins and drinking fountains.

Have your say

Council is inviting the community to review the updated plan and share their thoughts before it’s finalised.

You can visit the Engage Whittlesea website from 21 November to 19 December 2025 and complete a short survey or come along to an in-person pop-up session on:

  • Tuesday 2 December, 2.30pm to 5pm at Lauries Field (near the playground)
  • Thursday 4 December, 9.30am to 11.30am or 5pm to 7pm at the Brookwood Community Centre.

The 10-year draft master plan’s proposed works are subject to future funding.
