National Volunteer Week shines a spotlight on local community heroes
Published on 19 May 2026
Volunteers are at the heart of our community, giving their time, care and compassion to support others and create positive change. This National Volunteer Week (18–22 May), volunteers across the City of Whittlesea will be recognised and celebrated for the important role they play in the community every day.
As part of Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, this year’s National Volunteer Week theme, Your Year to Volunteer, encourages people to get involved in volunteering in ways that suit their lifestyle, while recognising the vital role volunteers play in building stronger, more inclusive and connected communities.
To mark the occasion, the City of Whittlesea is hosting a series of free activities and events designed to thank volunteers for their contribution, while also encouraging community members to explore volunteering opportunities.
The week-long program includes creative, educational and wellbeing-focused activities including a candle-making workshop, a presentation by Ambulance Victoria, as well as networking activities across the municipality. The events aim to bring people together through shared experiences, creativity and connection and honour the work of volunteers.
A special volunteer appreciation lunch will also be held on Friday 22 May at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre to recognise and celebrate the positive impact volunteers have on the lives of others. At this event representatives from the City of Whittlesea’s Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACC PYP) and other local volunteering services will be available to provide information about opportunities and support services.
Volunteering offers many benefits beyond helping others. It can improve mental wellbeing, boost confidence and create meaningful opportunities to connect with the community.
Brian from Kinglake West Fire Brigade finds volunteering both rewarding and meaningful, giving him the opportunity to connect with the community and make a positive difference.
“Volunteering gives me opportunity to meet local people, form relationships throughout the community and learn new skills. It’s a great way to give back to the community.”
