New planning controls put Beveridge freight project on track

The City of Whittlesea has welcomed the approval of new planning controls as a significant step forward in delivering the first stage of the Beveridge Intermodal Precinct.
The Minister for Planning has signed off on changes to the Whittlesea Planning Scheme that will support the delivery of the transformative infrastructure project.
Located in the municipality’s north-west, the Beveridge Intermodal Precinct will be a major freight and logistics hub adjoining the existing Melbourne-Albury-Sydney rail corridor.
By supporting increased rail freight between Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, the precinct will improve productivity, reinforce supply chains and reduce road congestion.
Council has consistently advocated for the project due to its anticipated economic benefits, with the precinct projected to contribute an estimated $2.5 billion annually to the state’s economy.
The precinct will also deliver increased local employment opportunities through the creation of both direct and indirect jobs.
Stage 1A of the project involves building a permanent rail connection to the rail freight corridor and an interim intermodal terminal.
The interim terminal, to be delivered by the Australian Government-owned National Intermodal Corporation, will be capable of handling up to two 1,800-metre interstate freight trains a day.
In February, Council endorsed a submission to the Minister for Planning supporting the project and advocating for issues such as transport infrastructure, environmental management and cultural heritage to be addressed before construction begins.
Quotes attributable to City of Whittlesea Mayor, Councillor Martin Taylor:
“The City of Whittlesea has long supported the Beveridge Intermodal Precinct for its potential to deliver significant new jobs and provide essential support for our growing population,” Mayor Taylor said.
“We welcome the Minister for Planning’s decision to back Council’s recommendation to strengthen key planning controls through amendments to the Whittlesea Planning Scheme.”
“Council will continue to work closely with the National Intermodal Corporation, neighbouring councils, and all levels of government to ensure our community shares in the full benefits of this transformative project.”
