Standing together against racism in the City of Whittlesea
Published on 20 October 2025
The City of Whittlesea is proud to celebrate the rich cultural diversity that defines our community, with more than half of our residents born overseas or having at least one parent born overseas. Our city is home to people from more than 140 countries, speaking over 120 languages.
In line with our long-term community vision Whittlesea 2040: A Place for All, we are committed to creating a fair, safe, inclusive and equitable city - one where everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture or faith, feels a strong sense of belonging.
Racism can take many forms - from verbal abuse and discrimination to subtle exclusion or unfair treatment - and continues to harm individuals and communities across Victoria, including within the City of Whittlesea. It occurs in workplaces, schools, public spaces, and everyday interactions, often targeting people because of their race, ethnicity, culture, language or religion.
To help residents better understand and address racism, the City of Whittlesea has partnered with neighbouring councils including Hume, Merri-bek and Darebin to create a multilingual anti-racism support services booklet.
The booklet provides practical guidance on recognising racism, understanding your rights, and accessing local and state support services, and is available in 11 community languages.
Residents can download the anti-racism support services booklet in their preferred language by visiting the Standing together against racism page.
Quote attributable to City of Whittlesea Mayor, Councillor Martin Taylor:
“Our diversity is at the heart of who we are in the City of Whittlesea. Our community is stronger because of our differences, and everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported, no matter their background.
“This new anti-racism resource will help residents understand their rights and access support in their preferred language. By standing together with our neighbouring councils, we’re taking an important step toward creating a more inclusive and equitable community.”
