The magic of Walking Thomastown returns this winter
Published on 04 August 2025
Grab your friends, family, and walking shoes to experience Thomastown in a fun new light at Walking Thomastown, a magical night-time walk through one of the City of Whittlesea’s oldest suburbs.
On Saturday 30 August, from 6pm to 9pm, step into a glowing world of wonder as neon lights, art installations and outdoor projections transform familiar streets and parklands into an immersive celebration of culture, creativity and community.
This enchanting evening invites you to explore local landmarks in a whole new way as the walking route takes you from Main Street Recreation Reserve, along Edgars Creek, through the charming Ziebell’s Farmhouse Museum, and into the heart of the historic Westgarthtown pioneer precinct.
This free, family-friendly event is packed with large-scale light art, live music, culture and plenty of photo-worthy moments along the way. Meet your neighbours, connect with your community and celebrate the end of winter with a fun and refreshing night outdoors.
This year’s program includes:
- Neon lighting, including the return of the Neon Dog Park
- Projection art from emerging and First Peoples artists
- Large-scale, colourful light installations along the walking trail
- Live performances, including cultural dance and local, young musicians
- Food vans and hot drinks to keep you warm
- Fire-twirlers, stilt walkers, face painters and much more.
Bring a torch and wear comfortable shoes, the walk is an easy, flat 1.6km route suitable for all ages. You can do as much or as little of it as you like, there is no need to complete the full loop. There are plenty of spots to stop and rest along the way.
The section between Main Street Recreation Reserve and the Lalor Scout Hall features a wide, even path that is accessible for prams, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Plenty of parking is available close to the starting point at Main Street Recreation Reserve.
Walking Thomastown is presented by the City of Whittlesea and its local facility Thomastown Recreation and Aquatic Centre (TRAC) in collaboration with the Friends of Westgarthtown, Yarra Plenty Regional Library and Thomastown Neighbourhood House.
