Doreen Recreation Reserve

Doreen Recreation Reserve is currently closed due to the Yan Yean Road Upgrade Stage 2 project. As part of the project, a portion of land from the reserve has been acquired to make space for the new lanes and paths that will improve safety for the community.

The future reserve will not be large enough to accommodate a regulation cricket oval in accordance with Cricket Victoria guidelines. The existing tennis courts are not suitable for use due to their age and condition.

As a result, the existing oval, tennis courts as well as the pavilion and toilet block will be removed.

The reserve will reopen as a passive public open space with a public car park once works are complete. Any future development of the reserve will be strategically planned in consultation with the public.

Park closure - Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why is the reserve being changed?

The reserve has been impacted by the Yan Yean Road Upgrade Stage 2 project as part of the Big Build Roads program.

The improved intersection of Yan Yean Road and Bridge Inn Road being built as part of the project requires the acquisition of a portion of the reserve land for road infrastructure. As a result, the reserve will be significantly reduced in size.

Why can’t the oval remain at the reserve?

Following the land acquisition for the road upgrades project, there is insufficient space remaining within the reserve to safely accommodate a compliant sporting oval.

Why are the tennis courts being removed?

The two public tennis courts were assessed in 2024 and 2025 as part of Council’s asset condition auditing process and were found to no longer meet the required standards for ongoing use. Given their condition and the reduced size of the reserve, the courts will not be reinstated.

When did the reserve close?

The reserve has been unavailable for public use since November 2025 due to the commencement of project-related works for the road upgrade. The reserve is currently being utilised as a storage compound for VIDA Roads and will be reinstated as an open space reserve upon project completion.

Will there be any sporting facilities at the reserve in the future?

No formal sporting infrastructure is currently proposed to be reinstated at the reserve once the road project has been completed. The reduced size of the reserve means a cricket oval no longer fits.

What will the reserve become after the works are complete?

The reserve will be reinstated as open space for passive recreation and car park for community use. Any future development of the reserve will be strategically planned and undergo community consultation to help inform the future design and function of Doreen Recreation reserve, so it reflects the practical needs of the local community.

Will the community be able to provide feedback on the future of the reserve?

Yes. At a future time when a new master plan is developed, Council will undertake community consultation and information about consultation opportunities will be shared through Council communication channels.

What alternative facilities are available nearby?

Council has identified a range of nearby sporting and recreation facilities that are available for public use. The proposed development at Ashley Park Recreation Reserve will also support broader community recreation opportunities within the area. While the facilities provided at Ashley Park will differ from those previously available at Doreen Recreation Reserve, the investment will contribute to expanding recreation infrastructure opportunities for the growing community.
