Tramoo Street shopping precinct upgrade

The City of Whittlesea is upgrading Tramoo Street in Lalor to provide a safer and more attractive shopping destination.

Background

The Lalor Master Plan, developed in consultation with the community, recommends improving the appearance and safety of the precinct to encourage more people to visit for their shopping, business and personal needs.

In June 2023, Council conducted a month-long consultation process whereby residents could provide feedback in writing, online or face-to-face on a series of proposed upgrades.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with a number of suggestions related to parking, safety and streetscape amenity incorporated into the final plan.

Project details

The Tramoo Street shopping precinct project will deliver:

- Improved pedestrian safety through the replacement of uneven footpaths

- Installation of a new raised pedestrian crossing to improve the safety of pedestrians in Tramoo Street

- Installation of new seating and bins to create an updated meeting space on the corner of Tramoo and High streets

- Improved amenity through the planting of new trees

- 45-degree angled parking to improve ease and safety of drivers reversing onto High Street

- New two-metre wide bike path connecting to Edgars Creek

- New parallel parking on Tramoo Street, including an accessible space outside the medical centre

- Installation of bike racks in Tramoo Street for the convenience of cyclists

To ensure safety during construction, there will be some changes to pedestrian access and road conditions.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and customers will still have access to all shops.

To complete the work as soon as possible, there may be some construction on weekends.

Timeline

Work on the Tramoo Street shopping precinct upgrade is expected to start in early May 2024 and be completed by August 2024.

Funding

This project is made possible through a $700,000 contribution from the City of Whittlesea and $200,000 from the Victorian Government's Living Local Suburban Grants Program.
