Celebrating National Carers Week: recognising the heroes of our community

Friday, October 06, 2023

Carers across the City of Whittlesea will be celebrated at local events in recognition of National Carers Week, an annual celebration that acknowledges the remarkable contributions of carers across Australia.

This year's celebration, taking place from 15 – 21 October, will shine a spotlight on the millions of Australians who provide support and care to loved ones facing various challenges.

Mill Park resident, Erika Ciccone, is a former full-time carer for her husband, and regularly took part in a City of Whittlesea-run carers group. When that finished, Erika decided to establish her own group, Connecting Carers in South Morang.

When reflecting on her experience, Erika remarked, "City of Whittlesea’s carers group helped me so much to become who I am today. I want to be an advocate for carers."

Erika is looking forward to the upcoming Carers Week events and wants to remind carers the importance of self-care and to connect with others who understand their journey.

"It’s important to meet people going through the same things you are, so you can know you're not alone," she said.

City of Whittlesea’s Chair Administrator, Lydia Wilson, has expressed her admiration for Erika's dedication and leadership.

"Erika's commitment to supporting carers in our community is truly commendable. Her selfless advocacy and establishment of the Connecting Carers Group play a crucial role in providing a sense of community and empowerment for carers in the City of Whittlesea."

“National Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the tireless efforts of carers like Erika and to raise awareness about the challenges they face daily. The City of Whittlesea is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive community that values and supports its carers,” she said.
